Spectacular 'meteor' shower over Britain
Thousands of people across the UK have reported huge fireballs streaking across the sky in what is thought to be debris from satellites or spacecraft burning up in the upper atmosphere.
It streaked across the night sky, leaving a trail of bright orange and green in its wake.
So startling was the sight that people across Britain contacted the police, many of them convinced they had seen a plane crashing or even a UFO.
One eyewitness speaking to the BBC called the spectacle a “beautiful sight, like something out of Independence Day” - the film about an alien invasion of Earth.
But the explanation was rather different. Experts say the sightings on Friday night were of a small object, most likely man-made space debris, burning up as it entered the Earth’s atmosphere.
They said the fireball could have been caused by an item around the size of a tennis ball, travelling at 17,000mph at a distance of about 70 miles above the surface of the Earth.
There are hundreds of thousands of such fragments from satellites and space rockets orbiting the Earth.
The spectacle was visible just before 11pm across much of the country, from Caithness in the far north of Scotland to as far south as Norfolk, the Midlands and south Wales.
Coastguards in Northern Ireland took calls from people who saw the object from Coleraine on the north coast to Strangford Lough in the south east. Durham Constabulary said it was “inundated” with calls from “concerned” members of the public.

Eyewitnesses described a huge fireball hurtling across the sky, from east to west, before breaking up into as many as 100 pieces.
Diane Martin of Rainworth, Notts, said she saw “a bright yellow and orange ball”. She considered calling the police before her husband went online and found that others had seen the same thing.
She said: “We only saw the one. It was quite low as well. It wasn’t that far away to be honest. We thought something was actually going to come down in the village.”
Emily Solman, 16, from Llantrisant, near Cardiff, was in the car with her father when they spotted gold-coloured lights in the sky.
She said: “At first we had no idea what it was. It looked like a train floating in the sky with all the lights - like something from Harry Potter - but then we realised what it was.
“It broke up in the sky into about 13 glowing balls. It was like a load of slow motion shooting stars. It lasted for about 15 seconds and they went lower and lower in the sky.
“Eventually we couldn’t see them any more. It was the best thing I’ve ever seen. Unreal.”
Brian Guthrie in Grangemouth, near Edinburgh, said it appeared to be something “pretty large breaking up in the atmosphere”.
He said: “I’ve seen shooting stars and meteor showers before, but this was much larger and much more colourful.”
The Kielder Observatory in Northumberland reported a “huge fireball” with as many as 100 pieces of fragment in the sky.
Stephen Chetrit, a 46-year-old charity worker from Thornhill, near Dumfries, said he had spotted the display while he was watching television at his home at around 10.45pm.
He said: “I had been in my living room with the lights off when I saw the lights outside my window.
“I didn’t know what it was, so I initially called the police to ask whether they’d had any reports of any UFOs or anything strange.
“They told me they’d had lots of calls from people reporting the lights, and that it was a meteor shower.”
Astronomers said they had not been expecting a naturally-occurring meteor shower on Friday night – and believed the object was most likely to have been man-made.
Greg Smye-Rumsby, an astronomer with the Royal Observatory, said: “The next meteor shower isn’t due until October 7, so my guess is that this is a piece of human-made space debris, rather than a natural object.
“It’s possible that it could have been a rocket or something that has never left the earth’s atmosphere.
“It appeared to me that the object was actually breaking up as it travelled across the sky, so I would be surprised if it didn’t burn up before it hit the ground.
“It’s still fairly rare to see something like this though – it usually only happens once every five to ten years.”
Tim O'Brien, associate director of the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Manchester, said it was unlikely the object would have hit the ground as it would probably have burned up in the atmosphere.
He said: "There is no real consensus yet on whether this was a piece of space junk or a man-made material.
"It would have been a bigger chunk of something. Typically the bigger things are space junk.
"This was probably 80 miles up burning as it entered the atmosphere. Mostly these things do burn up in the atmosphere.
"If anything did come down, it would have landed in the ocean."
The search for the meteor impact site is on in Alberta, Canada. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

The data that once suggested the Sun is orbited by a distant dark companion now raises even more questions
Over the last 500 million years or so, life on Earth has been threatened on many occasions; the fossil record is littered with extinction events. What's curious about these events is that they seem to occur with alarming regularity.
Nemesis is a theoretical dwarf star thought to be a companion to our sun. The theory was postulated to explain a perceived cycle of mass extinctions in Earth's history. Scientists speculated that such a star could affect the orbit of objects in the far outer solar system, sending them on a collision course with Earth.
In the early 1980s, scientists noticed that extinctions on Earth seemed to fall in a cyclical pattern. Mass extinctions seem to occur more frequently in the last 27 million years. The long span of time caused them to turn to astronomical events for an explanation.
In 1984, Richard Muller of the University of California Berkley suggested that a red dwarf star 1.5 light-years away could be the cause of the mass extinctions. Later theories have suggested that Nemesis could be a brown or white dwarf, or a low-mass star only a few times as massive as Jupiter. All would cast dim light, making them difficult to spot.
Scientists speculated that Nemesis may affect the Oort cloud, which is made up of icy rocks surrounding the sun beyond the range of Pluto. Many of these chunks travel around the sun in a long-term, elliptical orbit. As they draw closer to the star, their ice begins to melt and stream behind them, making them recognizable as comets.
If Nemesis traveled through the Oort cloud it could kick extra comets out of the sphere and send them hurling toward the inner solar system — and Earth. Impact rates would increase, and mass extinctions would be more common.
The Kuiper Belt, a disk of debris that lies inside of the solar system, also has a well-defined outer edge that could be sheared off by a companion star. Researchers have found other systems where a companion star seems to have affected the shape of the debris disks.
The dwarf planet Sedna lends further credence in the eyes of some to the existence of a companion star for the sun. With an orbit of up to 12,000 years, the planet presents a puzzle to many. Scientists have suggested that a massive object such as a dim star could be responsible for keeping Sedna so far from the sun.

Warning: Foul language can be heard in this video, viewer discretion is advised. This is a 42 minute video but around 21 minutes the video starts over but I put filters on it so you can see the strange image more clearly. You will not notice the image at first until your a coupe minutes into the video, and then you will see the bright circular image resting above the tree line in the same area as where the sun had just set. The beginning part of this video was shot just after the sun set behind the tree line shown in the video. At first I was catching Jets leaving thier very distinct trails behind them. After being very fruastrated of not seeing what I was looking for (a big planet) I stopped filming until my friend shows up and I then see what I was missing but only on the camera could you see it. As you hear in the video the bright ball you see setting above the tree line that in the first 5 minutes of video was not visible and then became very noticeable. As you hear in the commentary that to me and my friend it looked like a brightly lite cloud bur on the camera it looks like a bright ball of light. The fact that they were spraying chem trails to prevent the seeing of this object only makes it to where I have even more questions. The video switches after 21 minutes to the same video but in different format. I added Edge Detection and Posterization. This allows us to see any object on screen by giving it a border and the posterization allows us to see any object emitting a light source. Notice the prefect circle the object makes during this play back.

Thirteen people were killed when torrential rains triggered deadly landslides in Mexico's gulf state of Veracruz as weakening tropical depression Fernand moved northwest over central Mexico on Monday (August 26) and away from the country's major oil installations.
In the city of Martinez de la Torre, floodwaters swept through the city after heavy rains reportedly reaching up to 30 cm (12 inches) caused the Bobos River to swell.
In nearby Tuxpan, three people were killed after a massive downpour in the area triggered off landslides. In the town of Yecuatla, nine locals were killed after landslides crashed down over residential areas.
With flood waters creeping into homes, armed forces arrived in the town of Ursulo Galvan to evacuate at-risk residents.
Tropical depression Fernand had maximum sustained winds of 56 km (35 miles) per hour and moving further inland at about 14 km (9 miles) per hour, the NHC (National Hurricane Centre) said earlier on Monday (August 26).
It had made landfall near the coastal city of Veracruz early in the day.
Mexico's government discontinued all coastal warnings and the depression was seen weakening into a post-tropical remnant low later in the day.
Russia's Far East suffers from the region's biggest floods in 120 years, with about 50,000 people affected and authorities predicting more damage in the coming week, Russian media reported.
Areas around Russian major far eastern city of Khabarovsk have been flooded after heavy rains led to a rise of water in Amur river.
Local authorities announced the state of emergency and were preparing to evacuate citizens from the flooded areas on Friday (August 23).
Over a thousand rescue workers from all over Russia arrived to the region to fight the floods, Russian Chief State Fire Inspector Boris Borzov said.
"As you may see the situation is not a simple one, it is a difficult situation here. But it is under control. Today we have rescue workers from Irkutsk here. The federal emergency forces group has been organised here, which consists of 1767 Emergency Ministry workers and over 200 vehicles," Borzov said.
The floods, caused by a month of unusually heavy rain, are not expected to start receding until early September, the head of Russia's hydrometeorology monitoring service told Ria Novosti news agency earlier this week. The water in the Amur river in Kahabarovsk region has risen beyond its critical 6-meter level, reaching 718 centimetres, Russian news agencies reported.
In 2012, flash floods killed 171 people and damaged more than 4,000 homes in southern Russia's mountainous Caucasus region.
Hundreds of dolphins may die on East Coast before killer is identified
Aug. 20, 2013 at 4:20 AM ET
Michael Newman / Florida Keys News Bureau via AP
Wild bottlenose dolphins play off the bow of a sportfishing boat, off the Florida Keys near Islamorada, Fla.
A silent, mysterious plague is claiming the lives of scores of bottlenose dolphins off the mid-Atlantic coast. Over July and August so far, 228 dead or dying dolphins have washed up on beaches from New Jersey to Virginia, and the numbers continue to climb.
The dead include adult animals and calves, males and females. Sometimes, the animals that wash ashore are dead for days. Others arrive on their last breath. None have survived.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has formally classified the mass deaths as an "Unusual Mortality Event." The daily arrival of dead dolphins is an ominous sign of a larger, ailing coastal ecosystem, researchers say. It could even signal the return of a deadly sickness that raged for 10 months in the late 1980s, and felled more than 700 bottlenoses before the carnage ended.
"We started getting really alarmed by July 25, when we started getting more than one animal per day. That was the tipping point," Susan Barco, a researcher at the Virginia Aquarium Marine Mammal Center, told NBC News.
August usually brings about seven strandings to the Virginia shores, but this month, with two weeks to go, Barco has already counted 75 dead dolphins. And calls about new strandings are flooding in daily. "There are days when we cannot get off the phone," she said. "Everyone loves dolphins ... they're certainly concerned."
Of the world's 600,000 dolphins, up to 22,800 coastal migrators — some heading south, to the Carolinas for the winter, and others heading north — are expected to pass through the mid-Atlantic in the summer and fall. "We are worried that ... the elevated strandings will not stop until the dolphins leave our area," Barco said.
Researchers across the U.S. have rallied to support the investigation, at labs, at stranding sites, and at other remote locations. If volunteers find a recently dead animal — a carcass in good shape — they drive them to the aquarium lab facility. There, a team of three or four researchers works for about seven hours collecting swabs, tissue samples, body fluids — material that can be probed for viral or bacterial pathogens. Genetic tests are also on the to-do list.
From whole animals, Barco has recorded respiratory infections, joint infections, skin and mouth lesions. Some animals appear emaciated, as if they suddenly went off their food. But the real killer — likely a bacteria or virus of some kind — is still at large.

Officials examine a dead bottlenose dolphin that washed ashore on Long Island, N.Y. NOAA has declared a Unusual Mortality Event in the Mid-Atlantic regions including New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
Prime suspect: MorbillivirusChief among the suspected "causal agents" is the morbillivirus, a bug that turned up in the tissue of one dead New Jersey dolphin. It's still too early to say if the virus killed that animal, much less the rest of the herds.
Morbillivirus does have a track record, however. This virus was behind another mass die-off that claimed the lives of more than 700 dolphins between June 1987 and March 1988. The morbillivirus in that event wasn't found until years later, but the experts say technological progress will help identify the cause faster in this case.
How did those dolphins get so sick a quarter century ago? One theory, Barco explained, is that the coast-dwelling dolphin population caught the virus through exchanging breathed air or body fluids with dolphins that live in deeper waters. The offshore herds are believed to harbor the virus without getting ill from it, unlike their unfortunate coastal cousins.
"Looking at this event from 10,000 feet in the air, it looks much the same as 1987," Charles Potter, collections manager of marine mammals at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. But, he added, further tests are needed "before we can say if this a repeat or if this is just something that looks similar."
Because of the NOAA Unusual Mortality Event classification, dolphin experts have access to a deeper pool of funding for tools, equipment and salaries for investigation. But budgetary belts are tighter than ever, and this doesn't mean carte blanche. Currently, there is $200,000 available in funding for seven open cases, said one NOAA marine biologist. This mass death is just one of those cases.
Though fatigue is already setting in, experienced marine biologists know this may only be the beginning. Potter, who also helped research the 1980s die off, traveled down to the Virginia Aquarium to help with dolphin necropsies. "All of us would hope that this mortality would just cease. But I don't think it's going to happen," Potter said.
A few weeks in, with a long fall ahead, the work is already taking a toll on the humans involved. "We are alarmed and concerned and exhausted," Barco said. Have you seen a stranded dolphin? NOAA has the following safety tips:
Do not touch the dolphin.
Don’t allow pets to approach the dolphin.
Observe the animal from a safe distance of 100 yards (safe for you and the animal)

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, August 27 (RIA Novosti) - Eurasia's highest
volcano, Klyuchevskoi, on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia's Far East,
began erupting, Russia’s Skanex research and development center said in
a statement on Tuesday.
According to the statement, powerful explosions were registered in
the upper part of the volcanic neck. The volcano spews ash some 200-300
meters (650-985 feet) high in the air, while gas and vapor emissions
occur within an interval of three to five minutes.
Apart from powerful mud flows that could form from ice thawing on the
volcano's sides, the current eruption of Klyuchevskoi does not pose a
threat to locals. Experts, however, say that the eruption could pose a
threat to tourists visiting the volcano and local air traffic.
Last time the volcano erupted was in 2010, but its most powerful
eruption in the recent years was registered between January and May of
2005. Following that eruption, the volcano "sank" by 50 meters (about
165 feet), from 4,800 meters (about 16,000 feet) to the current 4,750
meters (15,845 feet).
A small volcanic vent producing steam has suddenly opened in the ground near Rome's International Fiumicino airport.
A geyser-like vent, known as a fumarole, opened up near a road crossing in the Italian capital on Saturday morning.
The small opening in the Earth's crust, has been filmed ejecting mud, water and steam near Fiumicino.
Italian geologists are currently examining the phenomenon. According to local media, the vent is thought to be naturally occuring.
The nearest possibly active volcanic system is the Monti Albani, which lies 12 miles south-east of Rome, although its last known activity took place around 20,000 years ago.

Ferrada Carlos Muñoz (1909-2001), Chilean astronomer who has already spoken on the planet Hercolubus (Planet X) in 1940.
You need to know that scientists talk about the planet Hercolubus (Planet X) or Red Planet. The first of these was the astronomer Chilean Carlos Muñoz Ferrada. This astronomer began to speak of the planet Hercolubus in 1940, that is to say, 43 years before the famous article on Planet X, appeared in the American newspaper The Washington Post in 1983. It is very remarkable that Carlos Muñoz Ferrada speaks of a gigantic planet-comet, planet because it has the mass of a planet and comet because it has the elliptical orbit of a comet. Remember the Mayan prophecies, according to Fernando Malkún the sixth Mayan prophecy tells of the arrival of a comet that will endanger the very existence of man.
I made a French adaptation of a text of the magazine "El Florecer Aureo" (in French The Golden Blossom), No. 15, entitled Monographic on Hercolubus: Planet intruder . I put my personal opinions brackets. 's first new "not informal" on Hercolubus Regardless of what the different theories, more or less "scientific" does not say on new astronomical discoveries, we are interested, too, investigate the "esoteric" information to deepen about Hercolubus. Early news approchement an intruder planet in our solar system, the self-taught astronomer from Chilean Carlos Muñoz Ferrada (died in October 2001 at the age of 92 years). On 11 June 1940 he announced to the world the existence of this planet he called "Planet-Comet" because it has the mass of a planet with the orbit of a comet. Mr. Muñoz Ferrada s is made known in his country, in a lecture he gave to the city of Concepción, in December 1938, at the age of 29, when he surprised the audience with the announcement of an earthquake land would on 24 January 1939 to 23 h 25, the city of Chillán, Chile. Nobody thought. It was considered a dream because it is based on a theory that belongs to him, "Geodynamics". And January 24 [32 to 23 h, according to the Spanish Wikipedia] there was an earthquake that left 30 000 dead.
Earthquake in Chillán, Chile, January 24, 1939.
His astronomical and geophysical predictions made him famous. Later he predicted other earthquakes such as the 1945 Ligua [ie earthquake occurred March 28, 1965, I think the publisher was wrong with the date] and the 1985 [ie earthquake occurred March 3, 1985 in Santiago], Chile. He also announced the trajectory and suffer disruption of Halley's comet, changing its speed, which s' occurred when the Halley walked 36 hours of its orbital period, to 85 kilometers of the Sun, the shortest distance in its history. To explain their observations and predictions, Carlos Muñoz Ferrada developed the theory of geodynamics , which is based on the attractions of the heavenly bodies, large explosions in the Sun and the cycles of geophysical disturbances. With this method he predicted earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, climate change, he discovered new planets and comets, deciphering their trajectories and other features. few people who visited Mr. Muñoz Ferrada at his home in the quiet Villa Alemana of Viña del Mar have seen there, in his laboratory, surrounded by strange devices developed and designed by himself, he had a special gift: the gift to enter into trance when he was researching and that, in this state, he wrote and drew what he received, and that it gave him much success as enemies throughout his life.
Carlos Muñoz Ferrada in his observatory Villa Alemana .
Ferrada Carlos Muñoz has stated that this "Planet-Comet": 1. It has an elliptical orbit like a comet and a large mass such as a planet, that is to say, a planet with a tail. 2. She approaches the Earth charged with cosmic energy. 3. Does not meet the heavenly laws established. 4. She travels between our Sun and Black Sun located 32 billion kilometers. 5. This will increase to 14 million kilometers from Earth. 6. It will eventually enter our solar system and will be seen with the naked eye and photographed. 7. His arrival will cause a geophysical and human change, bringing change and destruction. He provided us with other data in the television and multiple media. These data are the following: - 92 km / s = speed of the planet Hercolubus turning around the Black Sun. - 76 km / s = speed of the planet Hercolubus when it revolves around the Sun in the Solar System. - 300 km / s = speed of the planet Hercolubus halfway two suns. - 14,000,000 m = closest to the Earth in the path of the planet Hercolubus Point. - 32000000000 m = distance from the Sun Black Earth. - 0.003382378 s = Distance in light years from the Earth to the Sun Black. 385,000 m = Distance of the Moon to the Earth. - 300 000 km / s = speed of light. 9 460 800 000 000 m = distance traveled by light in one year. - If the planet-comet is 14 million kilometers [of the earth], then it is equivalent to 36.36 the distance of the Moon to the Earth. Apparently it is not enough to prevent catastrophe. We transcribe an extract of the report sent by Carlos Muñoz Ferrada Brian Marsden of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (specialists comets), Cambridge, Boston, Massachusetts, United States [j ' I made a literal translation, respecting the style of the author]: "And at the same time, the undersigned has included calculations, illustrations, sidereal positions, he has also calculated, and he has already expressed June 11, 1940, the slow penetration of the solar system, a new and brilliant cosmic mass approaches the Earth, a huge "Comet-Planet" (it has an elliptical orbit like a comet and a large mass such as a planet), strong vibrations, heavy, large electromagnetic field as three times that at the speed planet Jupiter, high, it is vertical [literal translation] in the earth elliptical and it travels in the forward direction in an elliptical orbit in time 13 years 333.3, 133.3 centuries between our Sun and the Black Sun a distant dying star that is 32 billion kilometers. Meanwhile, it will be the day of the great eclipse of the sun reddish. At this time, this mysterious planet will be in perigee just 10, 5 million kilometers from the Earth ... " Obviously, Mr. Carlos Muñoz Ferrada erred in this latter date; perhaps he was mistaken when he made some calculations, but will still be significant all the information, Since 1940, he passed the mysterious "Planet-Comet" ... Extension of the original article (April 2012) I decided to transcribe the final two paragraphs of the extract from the report sent by Carlos Muñoz Ferrada Brian Marsden [I made a literal translation, respecting the style of the author]: "The sun will rise inside the orbit of the Earth with a satellite speed of 66 kilometers per second, and at the same time, at that time, its perihelion only 139,100,000 km from the Sun. "In addition, the undersigned, it is also in the scope of probabilities, determining that this new and attractive gigantic cosmic mass can reach straighten the axis of the Earth with great gravity and geophysical disturbances and even, it may affect the attraction field of our satellite Moon. The Earth's elliptical orbit is parallel to the Celestial Equator. The two poles removed at the same time, as in the days of the equinoxes of spring and autumn. "
2011 JAPAN EARTHQUAKE WARNING
So, Stay Safe...
The sun fired off an intense solar storm at Earth Wednesday —
the second in two days — hurtling billions of tons of charged particles
at our planet, but should not pose a threat to people on the ground,
NASA says.
The solar eruption, called a coronal mass ejection,
occurred yesterday at 1:24 a.m. EDT (0524 GMT) and sent charged
particles streaking outward at 380 miles per second. That's just over
1.3 million mph. The solar fallout from the sun storm is expected to
reach Earth within the next three days.
"These particles cannot travel through the atmosphere to harm humans
on Earth, but they can affect electronic systems in satellites and on
the ground," NASA officials explained in a statement. [Solar Max Photos: Sun Storms of 2013]
Wednesday's solar storm erupted just 21 hours after another powerful
coronal mass ejection (NASA calls them CMEs) on Tuesday, Aug. 20. That
solar tempest also sent billions of tons of solar particles on their way
to Earth.
"Earth-directed CMEs can cause a space weather phenomenon called a
geomagnetic storm, which occurs when they funnel energy into Earth's
magnetic envelope, the magnetosphere, for an extended period of time,"
NASA officials said in a description of Wednesday's solar eruption. "The
CME’s magnetic fields peel back the outermost layers of Earth's fields
changing their very shape. In the past, geomagnetic storms caused by
CMEs of this strength have usually been mild."
Powerful geomagnetic storms can affect communications signals and
spark electrical surges in power grids, NASA officials said. They can
also supercharge northern lights displays or aurora observers at high
latitudes.
According to Spaceweather.com, a website that tracks space weather
and skywatching events, the two solar eruptions this week were triggered
when vast rope-like filaments of magnetic solar plasma erupted. The
CMEs should arrive at Earth in time for weekend aurora watching for
stargazers at high latitudes.
"NOAA forecasters expect the CMEs to arrive on August 23-24, possibly sparking geomagnetic storms around the poles," Spaceweather.com stated.
The sun is currently in an active phase of its 11-year solar weather
cycle and is expected to reach its peak activity later this year. The
current cycle is known as Solar Cycle 24.
An artist's concept of NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment
Explorer (LADEE) spacecraft orbiting the moon and preparing to fire its
maneuvering thrusters to maintain a safe orbital altitude.
NASA's
next moon shot, a robotic mission to investigate the mysteries of moon
dust and the lunar atmosphere, is set for a September launch from
Virginia's Eastern Shore.
The Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer
spacecraft, dubbed LADEE for short, is slated to launch from NASA's
Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Va., on Sept. 6 atop a
brand-new Minotaur 5 rocket, which will mark the maiden voyage for this
new booster. The $280 million LADEE mission will be the first
moon-bound spacecraft launching from Virginia's Wallops facility.
LADEE
— pronounced like "laddie," not "lady" — will probe the extremely thin
lunar atmosphere and investigate dust from the moon's orbit.
Atmospheres like the moon's (called a surface boundary exosphere) are
actually the most common type of atmosphere found in the solar system,
Sarah Noble, a LADEE program scientist said. [Photos: NASA's LADEE Moon Dust Mission in Pictures]
"Mercury,
a lot of the moons of other planets, even some large asteroids are big
enough to have a surface-boundary exosphere," Noble said during a news
conference Thursday. "It's a class of atmosphere we actually don't know
that much about. It turns out that the moon is a really convenient
place to go to learn about this common type of atmosphere."

This is an artist's depiction of NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust
Environment Explorer (LADEE) observatory in space with the moon in the
distance.
LADEE will also search the moon's atmosphere for lunar dust, possibly helping scientists solve a mystery. Some Apollo astronauts saw a glow
on the horizon of the moon before sunrise. Scientists think that this
may have been caused by electrically charged moon dust, a theory that
LADEE is expected to investigate.
It will take LADEE 30 days
to make its way into orbit around the moon. It's possible to make it
into orbit in less time, but LADEE would use up too much fuel along the
way, Butler Hine, LADEE project manager told the press.
NASA
scientists and engineers need to conserve the spacecraft's fuel to keep
it in the proper orbit around the moon. Because of the moon's lumpy gravity and LADEE's low orbit, the spacecraft needs a significant amount of fuel to keep its 100 days of science on track.
As
well as performing science, LADEE is also tasked with testing a new way
to communicate with NASA controllers on the ground. The spacecraft's
Lunar Laser Communications Demonstration allows LADEE to send and
receive data to and from the Earth in a different way.
"We're
going to use laser communications to demonstrate at least six times
more data rate from the moon than what we can do with a radio system
with half the weight and 25 percent less power," Don Cornwell, the
mission manager for the Lunar Laser Communications Demonstration said.
Get excited, space enthusiasts! NASA is headed back to the moon!
Just two years after the end of its shuttle program and one year after the landing of Mars rover Curiosity, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is embarking on yet another mission to space. This time it’s LADEE, or Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer.
LADEE is “a robotic mission that will orbit the moon to gather
detailed information about the lunar atmosphere, conditions near the
surface and environmental influences on lunar dust,” according to NASA’s
website.
The probe is expected to be launched just before 11:30 p.m. on Sept.
6. It will be the first moon launch from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility
on Wallops Island, Va. It will spend approximately 160 days in space,
with 30 days of that spent actually traveling to the moon.
The first goal of LADEE is to learn more about the lunar atmosphere.
The atmosphere of the moon is incredibly thin and its molecules never
collide with one another, creating what is known as an exosphere. The
Earth has an exosphere as well, and the NASA scientists hope that
studying the moon’s exosphere will reveal things about our planet, as
well as other planets in the solar system.
“It’s a class of atmosphere we actually don’t know that much about,
so it turns out the moon is actually a really convenient place to go and
learn about this really common type of atmosphere,” Sarah Noble, LADEE
program scientist from NASA HQ, said during a conference call on
Thursday.
The second goal of LADEE is to answer a longstanding question
of NASA scientists: “Was lunar dust, electrically charged by sunlight,
responsible for the pre-sunrise glow above the lunar horizon detected
during several Apollo missions?”
LADEE will do its data collection while orbiting the moon, but will touch down once the mission is over.
“We terminate the mission by intentionally crashing into the lunar
surface, taking science on the way down,” said Butler Hine, LADEE
project manager from NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field,
Calif., said on the call.
So let’s just say LADEE’s ‘landing’ won’t be quite as triumphant as that of Curiosity.
Publisher and producer Michael Tellinger discussed his study of ancient ruins at the southern tip of Africa, which he believes were associated with a vanished civilization that ET visitors, the Annunaki, brought together over 200,000 years ago, when they came here to mine gold. The ruins, which he's investigated along with Johan Heine, consist of thousands of stone structures over a large area. The structures show evidence of their extreme antiquity through erosion and patina growth, he detailed. One of the most important ruins he referred to as "Adam's Calendar," a monolithic stone calendar that could mark time out by the day.
The Annunaki tinkered with human genetics to make their mine workers, Tellinger said, referencing the work of Zecharia Sitchin. Among the ruins are hexagonal shapes clustered together like honeycombs, which he speculated could have been used as cloning tanks. Further, he suggested that many of the structures, made out of stones that contain quartz, were used as energy devices to power the large settlements.
By studying the area using aerial maps, Tellinger determined there were three great cities, some 60 x 60 miles each, one of which included Great Zimbabwe. Among the ruins, the first pyramids can be found, and details carved into some of the rocks include the Ankh symbol-- thousands of years before the Egyptian civilization used it, he reported.
Biography:
Michael Tellinger is a scientist in the true sense of the word, never shying away from controversial issues and scrutinizing every clue meticulously. After a 30-year long obsession with the origins of humankind and the genetic anomalies of our species, he wrote Slave Species of God. When Johan Heine exposed the mystery of the stone ruins of South Africa to Michael in 2007, they began an irreversible process of research that led Michael to some startling scientific conclusions and the completion of two more books, Adam's Calendar and Temples of the African Gods.
The Anunnaki (also transcribed as: Anunna, Anunnaku, Ananaki and other variations) are a group of deities in ancient Mesopotamian cultures (i.e., Sumerian, Akkadian, Assyrian and Babylonian). The name is variously written "da-nuna", "da-nuna-ke4-ne", or "da-nun-na", meaning something to the effect of "those of royal blood" or 'princely offspring'. Their relation to the group of gods known as the Igigi is unclear — at times the names are used synonymously but in the Atra-Hasis flood myth the Igigi are the sixth generation of the Gods who have to work for the Anunnaki, rebelling after 40 days and replaced by the creation of humans.
According to later Assyrian and Babylonian myth, the Anunnaki were the children of Anu and Ki, brother and sister gods, themselves the children of Anshar and Kishar (Skypivot and Earthpivot, the Celestial poles), who in turn were the children of Lahamu and Lahmu ("the muddy ones"), names given to the gatekeepers of the Abzu temple at Eridu, the site at which the creation was thought to have occurred. Finally, Lahamu and Lahmu were the children of Tiamat (Goddess of the Ocean) and Abzu (God of Fresh Water).

Known for her Earth changes prophecies, and the I AM America Map which shows vast swaths of North America submerged, Lori Toye (blog) discussed her latest work on the vital role of the 'Golden Cities' -- possible safe places during cataclysmic changes. These spiritual havens, which are situated on interconnecting ley lines, will aid in the reconstruction of sustainable communities for future generations, she said, adding that there are five such areas in the United States each 270 miles across-- Gobean (Arizona & New Mexico including Pinetop, AZ), Malton (Illinois & Indiana including Mattoon, IL), Wahanee (Georgia & South Carolina including Augusta, GA), Shalaha (Montana & Idaho including Missoula, MT), and Klehma (Colorado, Kansas, & Nebraska including Cope, CO). Internationally, there are a total of 51 golden cities, she stated.
Toye, who receives her information in a trance state from spirit beings or "master teachers," noted that some of the Earth changes may not be as drastic as originally depicted on her maps (such as the entire West Coast underwater). Prayer and enlightened human consciousness can positively affect circumstances, she pointed out. In a forthcoming book, she'll be revealing a new map which shows Earth in the distant past when lands such as Rama, Mu, Atlantis, and Amaru (where the US now is) once existed.
According to her sources, as we move into the "new times," there'll be a whole new generation of souls (like the Indigo children) that will help raise the Earth's vibration. We'll learn how to tap into specific areas of the Earth, and develop interdimensional travel, she continued. Yet, we'll be faced with dramatic earth changes over the next century, such as an asteroid or meteor impact in the Nevada desert that will set off a series of cataclysms including earthquakes, volcanoes, non-stop rain, and a possible pole shift, she cautioned.
Biography:
Prior to a dream in 1983, Lori Adaile Toye was a farm wife and mother of three small children. Since she had been a student of Ascended Masters teachings from 1978, when four Beings in white robes appeared in her dream and unrolled huge maps of North America, showing imminent changes on earth, she quickly recognized these Beings as the spiritual teachers she had been studying. Though she didn't act on this dream for several years, this event marked the dramatic beginning of her life's work.
Five years later, encouraged by more friends, Lori began to probe the dream through daily meditation, hoping that the details about the prophecy from her dream would be revealed. The four Beings in white robes appeared again and expressed willingness to share the information. Six months of transmissions began. There were over eighty sessions altogether. In the end, the earth changes material only comprised about ten percent of what was communicated to Lori by these Masters. The balance of the information was based in spiritual teachings. As the material was analyzed, it became apparent that this was the most detailed body of earth changes prophecy that the Western world had received in recent times.

Vulnerability of human societies to climate change mainly lies in the effects of extreme-weather events rather than gradual climate change. Impacts of climate change so far include adverse effects on small islands, adverse effects on indigenous populations in high-latitude areas, and small but discernable effects on human health. Over the 21st century, climate change is likely to adversely affect hundreds of millions of people through increased coastal flooding, reductions in water supplies, increased malnutrition and increased health impacts. Most economic studies suggest losses of world gross domestic product (GDP) for this magnitude of warming
Global warming controversy
The global warming controversy refers to a variety of disputes, significantly more pronounced in the popular media than in the scientific literature, regarding the nature, causes, and consequences of global warming. The disputed issues include the causes of increased global average air temperature, especially since the mid-20th century, whether this warming trend is unprecedented or within normal climatic variations, whether humankind has contributed significantly to it, and whether the increase is wholly or partially an artifact of poor measurements. Additional disputes concern estimates of climate sensitivity, predictions of additional warming, and what the consequences of global warming will be.
